Class Schedule

The centre is open year round and because all classes are drop-in, practical poses are chosen that everyone can move into at their own pace and enjoy. There is no competition in class and people are encouraged to close their eyes and focus inward and to continually use the breath to keep the mind focused. This allows and encourages the body to relax into each pose. These classes are suitable for all levels because the nature of the poses themselves will limit the extent to how far and deeply your body will move into them.

Meditation is an integral part of yoga practice and I encourage all of you to spend some part of your day in quietness and silence. This is an easy and gentle way to be introduced to sitting.

Face book: the dancing cat yoga centre
Welcome! My name is Gail Leslie & I opened the Dancing Cat Yoga Centre in May 1999 & at that time it was the first & only Yoga centre in the New Westminster area.  The centre continues to be unique in that all classes have been deliberately kept small & personal in a spacious, sunlit room. Part of a sound Yoga practice is the sangha (community) that is created through knowing the folks that come to class. Also what has always been important to my teaching & practice is to search for ease with less force & less speed.  Indeed, this approach may be more difficult than doing more!  As Ruthy Alon states in “Mindful Spontaneity”, non-doing is no less complex than that of doing. Deepak Chopra as well speaks about the Spiritual Law of Least Effort which allows us to let the pose do the work & the wisdom of the practice to shine through. All the teachers listed here have training in the Therapeutic approach to Yoga which emphasizes a sensitivity & gracefulness combined with precision & competence. See the front schedule for fees & times for Gail Leslie.

Face book: Yoga With Mary
Mary Vickars has been teaching Ananda yoga & meditation in the Burnaby/New Westminster area since 2003. A stress related condition brought her to the relaxation based & transformative style of Ananda yoga. Currently enrolled in the Ananda Yoga Therapist Program, she incorporates its healing & therapeutic benefits into each class. Research shows the therapeutic benefits of yoga & meditation for stress, anxiety, insomnia, menopause as well as for MS & Parkinson’s. Modifications are offered to accommodate different body types & fitness levels. Each class offers an opportunity to explore hatha yoga poses and the use of breath work, mantras, chanting, mudras, affirmations & energy consciousness.
Meditation is an integral part of the class with 10-15 minutes allocated. Meditation combined with asana practice gives us the tools to explore healing, tap into the brain’s potential to grow, improve creativity to feel balanced & centered thus enhancing our life & relationships. The philosophy of yoga is woven throughout the class & Mary teaches as an ongoing student of yoga. Class passes are sharable. Three month expiration. Monday 7pm - 8:15pm Thursday 7pm - 8:15pm $12.00 per class, $15.00 drop in.

The practice of yoga is an integral part of my life. The centering, grounding aspect of a regular practice allows me to face life’s challenges with more ease and confidence. Depending on the needs of the moment I can activate or calm body and mind through a well-rounded practice. Stretching, strengthening and balancing during asana (physical yoga poses) is supported and deepened when combined with the breath and presence of mind. In my classes and private sessions I guide students to maximize the benefits of such a practice for themselves. It is important to me that they enjoy doing yoga, that they can celebrate when it is easy and meet limitations with compassion and kindness. As a yoga teacher and certified yoga therapist (C-IAYT) I can offer my extensive knowledge, intuition and experience when assisting students in finding a way to practice that resonates with their needs and abilities. It is a joy and a privilege to teach at the Dancing Cat Yoga Centre. I also offer individual yoga therapy sessions either in a private studio setting or your own home.
